I often paint on colored paper leaving much of the surface area bare.  The color and texture of the paper become an integral part of the painting. I enjoy the tactile experience of working in pastels-the closeness of the pigment to the touch, the grit of the paper. When painting the figure, I rarely make preliminary sketches.  Instead, I begin directly on the final surface, allowing the painting to emerge as the subject reveals itself.
